Triple Sec (originally Curacao Triple Sec) is a citrus liqueur, a variation of Curacao liqueur. The part 'Sec' is translated from French as 'dry'. Therefore, Triple Sec is 'triple dry'. It is produced with a strength of 15-40%.
The manufacturers of this liqueur (Combier company) claim that it was invented between 1834 and 1848 by Jean-Baptiste Combier in Saumur, France. However, Combier was more famous for his élixir Combier, which contained not only orange but also many other flavours. Triple Sec became widely known by 1878 - at the Universelle exhibition that year in Paris, several distillers offered 'Curaço triple sec', as well as 'Curaço doux'.
The oranges and fruits that make up Triple Sec are dried before the distillation process. Then the fruits are soaked in alcohol and undergo triple distillation.
This liqueur is consumed both in its pure form and as part of numerous cocktails.
