According to popular legend, the cocktail got its name from oil engineers working in Iraq. To refresh themselves, they would mix vodka and orange juice and stir with whatever was at hand - usually a screwdriver. The Screwdriver cocktail is first mentioned in the American magazine Time in the issue of October 24, 1949.
