Cachaça (also known as Brazilian rum) is a strong alcoholic beverage obtained by distilling pure sugar cane extract. The first mentions of this drink date back to the colonization of Brazil.
During production, the distillate is divided into the 'head', 'heart', and 'tail'. The head and tail are usually discarded, and the heart is considered a more premium product. Cachaça is divided into white and dark. White cachaça is usually bottled right after distillation, making it cheaper. Dark cachaça is aged in wooden barrels from 3 to 15 years.
The most famous brands are Germana, Caninha 51, Pitu, Tatuzinho (Velho Barreiro), Old 88, Muller, Paduana, and Ypioca.
