Ray Foley had to use oranges that had lost their marketable appearance. They made juice from them and added schnapps to it. The drink turned out to be refreshing and tasty, and the addition of vodka made it stronger, which caused a certain furor and made this drink popular.

According to another version, bartender Jack Sherman in the "Wagon Tongue" bar first used such a combination of products. True, instead of schnapps, he used peach liqueur, which was very popular at that time in the United States.
