Rum is a strong alcoholic drink, made by fermenting and distilling by-products of sugar cane production, such as molasses and cane syrup.
It is believed that rum began to be produced in the seventeenth century on cane plantations in the Caribbean. Molasses is a byproduct of sugar production. Slaves discovered that it ferments into an alcoholic drink. As a result of subsequent distillation of this product, the first rum was obtained. Later the drink spread beyond the Caribbean.
Golden (also amber rum) is called aged rum of medium density. It gets its color due to aging in wooden barrels (usually charred barrels from under bourbon). Sometimes the drink is colored with caramel. Golden rum is more aromatic than light and can be considered intermediate between light rum and darker options.
