Rum is a strong alcoholic beverage, made by fermenting and distilling by-products of the sugarcane production, such as molasses and cane syrup.
It is believed that rum began to be produced in the XVII century on sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean. Molasses is a by-product of sugar production. Slaves discovered that it ferment into an alcoholic beverage. As a result of subsequent distillation of this product, the first rum was obtained. Later, the drink spread beyond the Caribbean.
Dark rum, also called black rum, is darker than golden rum. It is usually aged longer, in charred barrels. Dark rum has a much stronger taste than light and golden rum. Most often used for cooking.
