According to data in Harry McElhone's book "Barflies and Cocktails", first published in 1927, the gin version of the Derby cocktail was invented in 1903 by a certain E.G. DeGastreaux from the American town of Cincinnati and originally included gin, peach bitters and mint in its composition. In this case, the gin Derby was invariably shaken in a shaker with ice. This same cocktail recipe, without any substantial changes, migrated in 1930 to the book "The Savoy Cocktail Book", by the legendary Harry Craddock.
Since 2012, the IBA has fixed the original, historically correct recipe of the Derby cocktail in its official list, changing only the preparation method from Shake to Stir, which is more appropriate in this case.
