In an 'old fashion' glass with ice, add Campari and sweet red vermouth.
Then top it off with soda.
Stir and garnish with lemon peel and a slice of orange.
The Americano was invented by bartender Gaspare Campari in the 1860s. Originally it was called 'Milan-Torino', as its ingredients were from Milan (Campari Bitter) and from Turin (red vermouth 'Cinzano'). According to rumors, in 1900 Gaspare noticed a group of Americans happily sipping his cocktail in his bar. To show his hospitality and friendliness, the bartender gave the cocktail a new name 'Americano'.
The Americano was the first cocktail ordered by superspy James Bond in the first book by Ian Fleming.
