Sour cocktails were first mentioned in the barman Jerry Thomas' book "How to Mix Drinks, The Bon Vivant’s Companion" published in 1862. The predecessor of sour was punch. The typical recipe for such a cocktail consists of lemon juice, sugar syrup, and a strong alcoholic drink. Today, many sour cocktails are on the list of official IBA cocktails.
