Several people claim to be the inventor of the 'Bloody Mary'. According to some sources, the cocktail was invented by George Jessel between the World Wars. The first mention of the cocktail is found in the New York Herald Tribune on December 2, 1939. However, almost 25 years later, Ferdinand Petiot, who had been working at the 'King Cole' bar in New York since 1934, told New Yorker magazine (July 18, 1964 issue) that he had invented the tomato-vodka cocktail back in the 1920s when he was a bartender at Harry's New York Bar in Paris.
