Separate the egg white from the yolk and whisk each separately.
Pour the beaten components into an Irish cup.
Add rum, sugar syrup, and cognac.

According to legend, the cocktail was invented in 1820 by Pierce Egan, an English sports reviewer. The name of the drink comes from the names of two characters from Egan's novella - Jerry Hawthorn, Esq and Corinthian Tom.
