According to legend, at the end of the 19th century in the Limmer's hotel on the outskirts of London, a certain John Collins combined strong drinks with various additives. The result of Collins's improvisation was a namesake cocktail. The foundation was made up of gin 'Old Tom', diluted with sugar syrup and fresh lemon juice. The bartender completed the recipe for the John Collins cocktail with a drop of Angostura bitters.
