Pour vermouth and bourbon into a chilled mixing glass.
Add ice.
Splash Angostura bitter.
Stir well with a bar spoon.
Strain through a strainer into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a cocktail cherry.
The origins of it are controversial. Some claim that the 'Manhattan' cocktail appeared in the twenties in the 'Manhattan' club in New York. Others suggest that the drink dates back to the nineteenth century and was created as a result of the creative inspiration of Winston Churchill's mother. The cocktail entered the IBA collection in 1961.
