Shake all the ingredients in a shaker with ice and strain into a large chilled glass.
The 'Mary Pickford' cocktail was created in Cuba in the 1920s. At that time many Americans were suffering from Prohibition, and some would travel to Cuba for the weekend where alcohol was allowed. There are several versions of who created the cocktail. According to one, the creator of the drink is considered to be the bartender of the 'National de Cuba' hotel, Fred Kaufman, who prepared it especially for Mary Pickford. At the time, the actress was in Cuba, filming a movie with Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, her husband, a silent film star.
Another version points to the authorship of Constante Ribalaigua, the owner and bartender of the legendary Havana bar 'Floridita'. Less often, the name of the Cuban bartender Eddie Woelke is mentioned as the creator of the cocktail.
