Smoking

In a mixing glass filled with ice, add gin, vermouth, 1/2 bar spoon of maraschino, 1/4 bar spoon of absinthe and orange bitters. Stir the cocktail with a spoon. Filter through a strainer into a glass. Garnish the cocktail with a cherry and a spiral of lemon peel.

The Smoking cocktail is mentioned in the barman's manual by Harry Johnson, published as early as 1882, but it is quite difficult to judge the exact date of its origin. The only thing we know is that gin as the base of the drink began to be used only in the early 20th century, when people's tastes increasingly began to lean towards dry cocktails.
